This yellow little flower makes me happy. If I had a favourite color, yellow might be it.

I haven’t killed anyone!

calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutionsI’m not one for the whole New Year’s Resolution-thing.  The start of the year has no other meaning than Julius Caesar decided the date worked for him for religious and political reasons. Since then both the religion and the Roman Empire has ceased to exist.  (Click here, for a rather interesting read about why the year starts on Jan 1st as opposed to any other date of the year)

I am also not a fan of the whole resolutions thing since they always get broken. You’re good for a week, then it goes downhill from there and you can add yet another failure to your list of accomplishments. I realize that the only thing that has changed since last year, is (drumroll please) THE YEAR!

krr1r

The new routine I am trying to implement into my life is in no way, shape or form related to the new year. No, Sir! It is rather, a direct result of a decision I made 10 weeks ago, when I decided to quit smoking.  As many ex-smokers before me have learned, there is an obvious inversely proportional correlation between how much poison you no longer inhale into your lungs and the circumference of your waist. For those of you that have never quit smoking, this is what happens: For every cigarette you do not fire up and inhale, your waist grows! I KNOW! IT’S SICK!

fb_img_1451149176464Then add all the fat and sugary foods us Northerners stuff our faces with during Christmas. Of course, by tradition there must be 7 different kinds of festive bakes. There are several traditional dinners we must go through, and I can assure you – not one of them is particularly healthy! Not even the cod, as it is served with a delicious sauce, consisting of cream and butter. There is chocolate, marzipan, desserts and puddings, there is beer and aquavit, there is soda and there is wine – and it is all flowing in liberal quantities. Of course, quitting smoking under such circumstances may seem foolish if gaining weight is a concern. Yes, I’ll give you that. But then there is never a good time to quit smoking in that respect, there will always be a celebration or an event where one may be tempted to stuff sugar cookies in one’s mouth.

michelingThe thing is – there is a significant difference between quitting smoking and quitting life. I want to keep my social life even though I choose not to smoke. I do want to go about my life in the exact same way as before – just without the smokes! I do want to celebrate X-mas, without the smokes. I want Easter-vacation as well (I do not celebrate Easter religiously, but it is bank holidays and time off), and I do want my marzipan eggs and the sweets and the seasonal foods. I am unwilling to change all of that just because I quit smoking! The result is that 10 kilos places themselves around my waist, and I am down to two pairs of jeans that I am able to zip up, and then the top half of my stomach spills over the waistband making me look as if I got stuck halfway through a motorcycle tire. If I keep this up, I will look just like the Michelin man! And that is the reason I took up jogging!

6fihrI must say that quitting smoking this time is going way better than before. I haven’t really exploded on anyone, and the urge to kill people for being annoying has not been very prominent. Now, that fact alone should qualify for a shiny #weeklysmile!

(If you want to hear all about my first week of jogging, stay tuned for a very, very, very whiney post.)

Turkey smiles

imagesThis past week has been a good week. A really good week! As many of you know, it was Thanksgiving-weekend, and Old Mamasan will not let a turkey-opportunity pass her by! We don’t have Thanksgiving off, and we don’t celebrate it here in Scandinavia, therefore it makes more sence to cook the bird on Saturday. I have made it my own tradition to invite family or friends for Thanksgiving dinner on the saturday after the actual American Thanksgiving, and I hope this tradition will not fade. So we invited my sister and her hubby from Sweden, and some friends here in Copenhagen to Gobble til you wobble-day. We had a grand time with great laughs  and some pretty grand food and we all ate til we were about to pass out!

turkey-cartoonI’m not sure when the turkey became a common food for New Years in Norway, but I do know we have bred turkeys here for a couple hundred years. For X-mas I will hang onto some traditional dishes from western Norway, but I’ll cook a big bird for my version of Thanksgiving and for New Years.

I would like to share with you my recipes for some of the sides that I use with the Turkey (and they can of course also be used with other festive foods than Turkey!), and hope you find inspiration to perhaps try something new. My family and I think all these sides are super good! My recipes will come as individual posts over the next couple days, so please check back later if you’re in the mood for some good eatin’!

14917267_10154344610811622_2277339575043380159_oThis past week there has been alot of smiles. Of course, Halloween being the reason for many of the smiles in my household. Halloween is not really a Norwegian or Danish thing, but it is getting more and more common. Of course there are valid arguments on both sides of whether or not we should import traditions from abroad. I guess I have landed on the pro-Halloween side, because I do not think it hurts anyone to dress up and have a little fun. To hand out some lollipops while complementing the fantastic costumes is not what I consider a nuance – but rather fun. It’s not like you are being bludgeoned to hand out candy. Unfortunately, they had terrible weather this year for trick or treat. Of course, Old Mamasan made Pumpkin pie, and the Karate Kid did a fantastic job decorating, don’t you think?

Tivoli in Copenhagen takes it all out for Halloween, and it is so much fun! This year, we went twice! Actually, the Kid went three times, as he went with the people from church on Sunday, in addition to the two times with us. We all just love seeing the decorations and the lights. I hope the pics convey some of the ambiance and god times this time of year in Tivoli. Of course it is pure chaos in Tivoli in the weekends, so do yourself a favor and visit on the weekdays.

(Those of you who notice that Sir Nerdalot is looking a tad less fuzzy in some of the pics, yes, he shaved for Movember and is now growing a stache :-))

Oh, another reason for me to smile is that I have finally got an idea for my NaNoWriMo-book. It might not be a great idea – but it is an idea, no matter how crappy 🙂

Spanish Smiles

Last week we went on vacation to Spain. We are talking 10 days of constant touristy smiles here, so it is almost impossible to choose just one… To spend time with loved ones is a definite big smile, to learn that I do remember some Spanish also made me smile. Enjoying the fab tapas and paella/arrozes – also grounds for huge smiles. The list goes on and on, and I will be bugging you with posts and pictures in the days to come.

I have decided to interpret this week’s smile literally – with smiles I have managed to capture on my cam during the vaccy in Spain:

Ox Muzzle? I am very curious as to how they prepare this.

Bliss

When prompted to showcase a picture that captures my idea of bliss, there is just too much to choose from. I’m a happy-go-lucky kind of person, I find bliss and humor in most things. I landed on the following picture of Sir Hoof Hearted, our family happy-dog and furtain in chief, giving Chairwoman Miao, her Royal Clawness, a morning bath and cleansing of catty ears.

Of course, the blissful nature of such situations are not planned for, and I can promise that getting up to get the good camera to snap the picture would have ruined the moment. I was lucky to have my mobile phone within reach, and quickly snapped a few pics.

So here you have it: My idea of Bliss
