Gettysburg National Military Park

We have visited Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of the American Civil War‘s turning point; the three day Battle of Gettysburg. Although history-buffs in general, none of us have specialized in the Civil War, I therefore recommend that you pick up a history book to read about it, if you are interested, or follow the wiki-links above for the short version.

The areas where the fighting took place are all hallowed ground, and it is possible to take tours or drive around in your own car. This being winter and the ground covered in snow, we decided to just visit the The Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park . Man, was that time well spent! So interesting, so educational and so emotional!

Any war is complex, and has several layers of reasoning from either side, but what this war comes down to is slavery. Slavery has excisted in many cultures throughout history, and according to United Nations estimate, roughly 27 to 30 million individuals are currently caught in the slave industry today.


President Abraham Lincoln delivered the speach Gettysbyrg Address – one of the The Greatest Speaches in the World, on November 19th, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers National Cementary, 4 1/2 months after the Battle of Gettysburg:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Well it was. Or it is. Sometimes. I can’t afford to travel all the time. I actually have to make a living. Get some travel cash. I travel for vacation, I do not travel for work (Unless a big-ass travel magazine wants to hire me full time as a travel journalist and pay for all travelling. If so – I am definitely in!)

Our next (impulsively purchased – read about it HERE, and a little bit HERE) vacation will commence in less than 2 weeks. This time we are going to Washington D.C and New York City, and everything in between.

My dear friends reading this, I am wide open for suggestions of what to see/do/eat. Your input is highly appreciated. I am looking forward to turning this blog back into a travel blog!

Sandwich-cake (Smørgåstårta)

This is a Swedish classic, absolutely yummy and eye-catching! The Swedes use this for special occasions. It may well be made a day in advance, and only your imagination limits what to fill it with and how to decorate it.  (Tuna / crab / salmon. Vegetarian. Sun-dried tomatoes, olives and serrano ham, just to make a few suggestions).


On my first attempt I have chosen paté and ham in the filling, and oh my gawd was it good! This recipe is more than enough for 4 people, and you can easily add up the recipe if you need a bigger Sandwichcake. You can make it round, or any shape you want. For big parties, use a baking tray or a big tray or plate.



  • 9 slices of white bread


Filling 1:

  • 100 g bacon pâté (or any paté that suits your liking)
  • 1 tablespoon cream
  • 1 tablespoon crème fraiche
  • 30 g cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons pickles, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Filling 2:

  • 100 g cooked ham, finely chopped
  • ½ leek, finely chopped
  • 2 dl crème fraiche
  • 1 dl mayonnaise
  • 0.5 dl fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Suggestions for garnish:

  • Salad
  • Grapes
  • Cheese
  • Ham
  • Cucumber
  • Hardboiled egg
  • Tomatoes


  • Filling 1: Mix all ingredients until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Set in fridge for 30 min.
  • Filling 2: Mix all ingredients until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Set in fridge for 30 min.
  • Cut crusts of white bread and put them side by side on the serving dish. Cover with Filling 1, and add a new layer of bread.
  • Cover with half of the filling 2, and add a new layer of bread. Cover with the rest of filling 2 on top and down the sides. Set in fridge for 30 mins before you decorate.

Svenskenes deilige og iøynefallende klassiker! Svenskene bruker gjerne smørgåstårta ved spesielle anledninger. Den kan godt lages dagen i forveien, og det er bare fantasien som setter grenser for hva du kan fylle den med, og pynte den med. Tunfisk/krabbe/laks. Vegetar. Soltørket tomat, oliven og serrano. Det er bare å begynne en plass! ;-p

Denne oppskriften er mer enn nok til 4 personer, og du kan enkelt gange den opp dersom du skal mette flere. Lag den rund, eller fyll en langpanne, alt etter hvor stort selskapet ditt er.


9 stk loffskiver

Fyll 1:

100 g baconpostei

1 ss fløte

1 ss creme fraiche

30 g kremost naturell

2 ss agurkmix

Salt og pepper etter smak

Fyll 2:

100 g kokt skinke, finhakket

½ purreløk, finhakket

2 dl creme fraiche

1 dl majones

0.5 dl frisk persille, finhakket

Salt og pepper til smak

Til pynt f.eks:






Hardkokt egg



  • Fyll 1: Bland alle ingrediensene med mixmaster til den blir jevn. Smak til med salt og pepper. La stå kaldt i 30 min.
  • Fyll 2: Bland alle ingrediensene med mixmaster til den blir jevn. Smak til med salt og pepper. La stå kaldt i 30 min.
  • Skjær skorpene av loffskivene og legg dem 3 på rad. Dekk med Fyll 1, og legg på et nytt lag med brød.
  • Dekk med halvparten av fyll 2, og legg på et nytt lag med brød. Ha resten av fyll 2 oppå og ned langs sidene. La gjerne kaken stå i kjøleskapet i 30 minutter før du pynter for at fyllet skal få «sette seg» litt.
  • Dekorer kaken akkurat som du vil.
